URAP Statement on its New Report: Intended and Unending
February 3, 2022
URAP’s second report inauguration “Intended and Unending – a report on China’s Transnational Harassment and Intimidation Campaign against Uyghur-Canadians”
Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project (URAP) is pleased to announce the launch of the second report entitled “Intended and Unending” on China’s transnational harassment and intimidation campaign against Uyghur-Canadians. This is the first time when Canada-specific, in-depth research of the diaspora was undertaken with the aim of investigating China’s interference on Canadian soil, its campaign of silencing the exiled activists and general public alike, methods and tools deployed to harass, intimidate, coerce to spy or become an informant..
Executive Director of URAP Mehmet Tohti said “some might think that escaping the grip of China physically will provide thought-after safety from the harassment, intimidation in Canada. This is a wrong assumption, CCP’s persecution trans passes international boundaries and haunt already traumatised community right here, in Canada”.
After speaking with Uyghurs across Canada for this report on diaspora harassment and repression, the Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project (URAP) found that not a single of these community members has escaped the long arm of the Chinese state’s campaign of transnational repression, intimidation, harassment and even direct threats. Time after time, Uyghurs described in great detail how despite residing half a world away from China and their homeland of East Turkistan—where a genocide is being carried out against their people—the ruling Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) vast security and military apparatus has still managed to reach into their and their family’s lives to remind them that they are never fully free of its repressive grip.
Uyghur-Canadian community rightly feel to be endangered and that their voices are not adequately responded by security apparatus of Canada. URAP hopes this report along with many other already published investigations will incite our Government officials to stand up against Chinese Communist bullying. This is especially true in light of the ongoing Uyghur Genocide.
URAP have summarized its Recommendations to the attention of the Government of Canada as well as we hope to get the general public awareness.
