Global Affairs Canada’s Statement on Arbitrary Sanctions Imposed by the People’s Republic of China on Canadian Individuals and Entities

Ottawa, Canada

The Government of Canada has issued a strong statement condemning the Government of China’s recent imposition of arbitrary sanctions against Canadian individuals and entities, including members of the Uyghur Rights Advocacy Group’s staff and advisory board members. This move is seen as an attempt to suppress the voices calling for justice and accountability concerning the human rights violations and abuses perpetrated by the Government of China in the Uyghur Autonomous Region.

Members of the Uyghur Rights Advocacy Group, including its staff and advisory board members, express their appreciation for the support and solidarity extended by the Government of Canada in standing against the Government of China’s actions. They view this as an essential affirmation of Canada’s commitment to human rights and free speech.

In response to the sanctions, Global Affairs Canada issued a statement today which emphasized that:

The Government of Canada will not tolerate any threats, acts of violence or harassment against people in Canada, or against their families and friends, because of their political opinions or to silence dissenting viewpoints.”

The statement further highlights that multiple independent UN experts and other international bodies have urged the Government of China to address credible human rights violation allegations and fulfill its obligations under international law. Global Affairs Canada further emphasizes that “Canada views scrutiny of its own human rights record as an opportunity to improve its performance, and continues to call on China to do so, as well.” This is followed by travel advice for citizens to exercise caution due to the risk of arbitrary enforcement of local laws with the commitment provide consular assistance to affected Canadians facing sanctions.

In response to Global Affairs Canada’s statement, Executive Director Tohti reaffirmed, “Yes, it is reassuring to see our government standing firmly by our side to ensure our rights are protected and to send a clear message that any attempts by the Government of China to harass or silence our voices will not be tolerated. As an organization, we will redouble our efforts and continue to advance our legal and policy advocacy campaigns in Canada with unwavering determination.”

The Government of Canada reasserts its position that sanctions targeting individuals for speaking out on human rights issues will not deter the pursuit of justice. Canada remains committed to supporting those who stand up for the rights of vulnerable populations around the world.
